Have a Rat!

The rising food prices have recently become a global dilemma. This Tsunami of inflation has left the poor and the hungry in some sort of a collective starvation. While this worldwide crisis has fallen on some governments' deaf ears, India, on the other hand, has found its own method to combat the high food prices.

As the food prices (such as rice) go high, Indian people are highly encouraged to eat rats "in an effort to battle soaring food prices and save grain stocks." And if you're still wondering, NO this is not a joke!

"Eating of rats will serve twin purposes -- it will save grains from being eaten away by rats and will simultaneously increase our grain stock," Vijay Prakash, an official from the state's welfare department, told Reuters.

Officials say almost 50 percent of India's food grains stocks are eaten away by rodents in fields or warehouses.

Who knew that rats were the solution to the increasingly-high food prices?

Bonne appetite, everyone!

First, YAY a post :D

ahem *composure*

Desperate needs call for desperate measures. But rats, gosh.

Lol sometimes especially in SA i think fictitious comedy cannot compete with reality. Reality which is so ridiculously scary, helpless human beings have little defense but to laugh...

You bet!

@ 8bitsofcofee

Oh com'on! It can't be THAT bad! They say it tastes just like chicken! :D

I find this both sad and provokingly offensive. I can't help but wonder if they really had to go that far? I bet those government officials won't be having rats for lunch one day.

I'm sure if they paid a little bit extra effort, they would've come up with something better and a little bit more edible than RATS!

Indeed. It is surely everywhere that reality is far funnier than fiction.
But at least laughing it out would help lessen the intensity of the upsetting, disappointing truth.

Should I be upset? Disappointed? Angry maybe? Surprised at least? The truth is that I'm not.

It's sad that I have become accustomed to the awful things happening in this world. May God save my soul.

You said it best. None of those government officials will be eating rats for lunch one day,

Same thing here when they said in response to soaring rice prices, well cut back on rice! I don't see any cutting back on rice going on in dinner gatherings and parties of theirs.

Loved your blog. i like how you write about most things that interest and provoke me yet somehow, always fail to write about myself. Excellent blog indeed. Bookmarked

The exact same thought crossed my mind when I first read this. I guess you can do nothing but laugh at how both Saudis and Indians attemp to solve the issue of high food prices.

Welcome to my blog! A pleasure reading your comment! :)

@ broken wing

Welcome back, girl! :D

So, wanna try some rat snack? A big fat rat sandwich, maybe?

Ok, the roaches part has turned my stomach! I think I'm about to vomit!

I think God loves India in ways rats understand better than humans.

I diffenetly picked the wrong time to read this...I don't think I'm going to have lunch now :S

but honestly I'm not surprised to read such a thing...the world gets stranger every single day indeed...I mean there are people out there who eat rats,snakes,bugs...and god knows what else...I really hope for their government to start taking action toward this ordeal and do something about it because it's going way too far.

thanks a lot AGC for an interesting post as always :)

A combination of reasons..
The Changing climate which is causing draught, or floods, ruining crops...
Global markets putting up prices....
Bio-fuel crops, which are replacing food crops..
