Die, Mickey! DIE DIE!

"Mickey Mouse must die" . That's what Muhammad Al Munajid, a well-known Saudi cleric, recently said when answering a viewer's question regarding mice. In his defense, Mickey Mouse is " a corrupting influence" and accordingly must be killed.

But he warned that depictions of the creature in cartoons such as Tom and Jerry, and Disney's Mickey Mouse, had taught children that it was in fact loveable.

Poor Mickey, he'll be soon heartlessly beheaded. But the question remains; how can you actually kill a cartoon character?
Any thoughts?

I used to know Mohammed Al-Munjid =\
I checked his website, and this is the part about Mickey Mouse :
I'm sadly not very well read, but is it mentioned anywhere in the Qura'an or Hadeeth anything about mice being "Soldiers of Satan"?
According to Islamic law, the mouse is a repulsive, corrupting creature
It's repulsive alright, but corrupting?

I'm a bit flummoxed to tell you the truth =/

Watching Mickey Mouse didn't make me love mice, I still find them icky, but still I can't fathom why he considers them to be soldiers of Satan? It's the first time I've ever heard that.

The creator died long back so his character will soon follow...without the need for a fatwa.. especially with thousands of new characters of TV ;-)

@ Mr. Cookies

You know, somehow it sounds funnier in Arabic. :D

@ Guari

Me too. I still think mice are the dirtiest creatures on the face of earth. That didn't have anything to do with me loving or hating Mickey Mouse.

@ adrenalinefix

being replaced by nowadays-more-popular cartoon characters doesn't mean to cut the little mouse's throat.

@ hissweetheart

Probably Mickey is one of those genies. Who knows!

@ crimson shimmer

that was exactly how I first reacted. :D

@ UFO

Are you a real alien? ;)

@ Dubai Guy

I really don't know. Please, try posting it again! :)

@ la senora lolitta

The Arabic saying you mentioned is not really applicable when it comes to such 'Sheikhs' ridiculing Muslims' minds and distorting the global image of Islam.

i'm not a big fan of mickey, but come on!

he's just a cartoooon! instead of blaming cartoons for children's corruption, why not take a look at the lovely parents. just a thougt.

I hate it when ppl refuse to take the blame, and stick it on others. especially cartoons!

First of all, let me clarify that I am a big fan of cartoons, especially Tom & Jerry, I still watch them whenever I can :-D

Now coming back to the topic, to me this whole article appears fishy since it appeared in a Western newspaper. And I think all of us know how "unbiased" most Western newspapers are when it comes to portraying muslims.

Secondly, I think we are not supposed to criticize our scholars, they definitely know more about religion than you & me. You cannot deny some of the points raised by the scholar, especially plague, etc.

If hollywood today has glamourized some things, this does not mean we should start calling a wrong as right & vice versa.

This is my humble opinion :-)

@ Skittles,

THANK YOU! That's exactly what I was trying to say.

@ Dubai Guy

I don't think this is part of the conspiracy theory, my friend. The article appeared in a western newspaper, yes, but the guy first appeared on TV saying all this nonsense publically.

I think Muslims are somehow brainwashed when it comes to criticizing scholars' opinions. No one is above criticism, I believe. And that long beard doesn't really make a scholar afterall, does it?.

Muslims should never be blind followers to what "scholars" say. Allah created us with brains (which we are supposed to use) in order to evaluate and judge such irrational fatwas and not hurriedly rush to the-scholars'-know-better type of thinking.

My post was never intended to ridicule or personally make fun of the "shiekh". I just expressed my perplexed feelings of astonishment sadness as well as partial amusement at Almunajid's method of analyzing and ultimately coming up with this particular fatwa.

Your comments are always appreciated. :)

PS. Big fan of Tom & Jerry you say? ;)

Isn't this the case with us all? :)

I still don't agree with your point of view. They say, no point arguing with ladies, so I guess I better keep my mouth shut. No comments :-D

A Global Citizen said...

"no point arguing with ladies" ???

Hmmm, is it just me or this sounds a little sexist?

& I don't really force people to agree with me, anyway. :)

I think extremist scholars like this guy need to be stopped form making ridiculous comments like these. Its making muslims look like a bunch of stone-age idiots.

Instead of whining about a fictional cartoon character how about addressing the real problems afflicting the ummah. And maybe ways to solve them for a change...

Dubai Guy said...

Global Citizen, I am sorry if that sounded as a sexist comment, it was unintentional. I was just kidding, when I said no arguement with females, I meant that as a sign of respect & not otherwise. I apologize :-)

Now coming back to the topic, I have two new things. One, found out the video, just wanted to share with you in case you have not seen it. Two, the scholar's point of view over the controversy. Here you go :-)

Dubai Guy,

Thank you for providing me with these beneficial links. But I have seen the video in which AlMunajid appeared stating his opinion before writing this post. I must remind you that I'm not the type of person/blogger who would randomly pick up any news out of nowhere and go rushing to write about it.

In the video, I believe it is quite apparent that AlMunajid has made two obvious statements. The first, is that cartoon characters ,which are represented as animals, negatively influence children's minds and teach them that such animals are actually loveable ( which is quite ridiculous, I think). Second, referring to mice specifically as "repulsive, corrupting creatures" and accordingly should be killed. THEN he comes to Mickey Mouse and Tom & Jerry being under that category of "repulsive, corrupting creatures" and following the same penalty.

As for his later statement, I didn't even bother to read it. You can say, this whole process has become somehow predictable for me. The "sheikh" carelessly issues a ridiculous fatwa, the world reacts making fun of Islam (and unfortunately not of the sheikh himself) and then he appears again giving us the I'm-sorry-I-meant-it-the-other-way-around type of speech.

how stupid can a person be ? seriously that is just ridiculous and why are we listening to such crap or broadcasting it for that matter!!
Mickey Mouse must die??!!! how is this justified? this doesn't make any sense!!
what happened to the good 'ol sheik's? you know, the normal ones ??

god this makes me so angry ! :@

So you are still sticking with your point of view? :-)

Anyways, just wanted to wish you a happy eid, Eid Mubarak to you & your loved ones :-)

Kill Mickey? That's too extreme! Why don't these people look at it in a more simple way.Just take it easy, it's just a cartoon character and will not have big influence on kids. I'm a fan of Tom and Jerry and now I'm still very much in love with it. Let the younger generation has a nice childhood with these cartoon characters, leave them alone!

maybe I couldn't say If that is wrong or right, but I still could to say that " I didn't convice and actully I can't " .
I dunno but I know if I really love MICKEY MOUSE - I love him so much when I was child and still- it doesn't mean that I like mice !
I really hate the real mice ,,, I think it doesn't make any sence to kill HIM!
in the end he's just a cartoon !
